•    The Gift of Light

Totally Townies is thankful for the gift of light on cold winter days. February 2nd is Candlemas Day, the Christian Festival of Lights, halfway between the shortest day of the year and the spring equinox. We are celebrating this ancient tradition by honoring the gift of light. This is the perfect time to indulge in the quiet splendor of candlelight, cozy up by a fire and soak on the wonder of spring that will soon emerge as winter gives way to the power of the sun.

  •    Sweet Tortilla Snowflakes

Totally Townies is thankful for the gift of kids in the kitchen – we love to cook, to bake, and just create! Try these Sweet Tortilla Snowflakes to add a bit of pizzazz and sparkle to your kitchen. Thanks to Disney Family Fun for this easy recipe.

    • 6 flour tortillas
    • Canola or vegetable oil for baking
    • Confectioners’ sugar
    • Edible glitter (optional)

    1. Heat the oven to 400 degrees. Warm the tortillas (about 15 seconds) in the microwave.
    2. Individually fold the tortillas in half once and then in half again, so that you end up with a shape that resembles a wedge of pie (it will be thick). Using clean scissors, cut triangle, circles, or squares out of the edges, as if you were making paper snowflakes. Unfold the tortillas.
    3. Lightly brush the tops of the snowflakes with canola or vegetable oil and place them on a cookie sheet slightly apart.
    4. Bake them until lightly browned and crisp (about 4 minutes). Sift confectioners’ sugar on the snowflakes while warm. For extra sparkle, add a dash of edible glitter.

    We hope you enjoy!!  Yummy!!!

  •    Howell Winter Marketplace

We like to keep it simple…Totally Townies is starting with the basics – The farmers’ market – fresh veggies straight from the fields, natural soaps, hand-knitted goodies, and all sorts of artisan breads and sweet treats. The Brighton Farmers’ Market is open from the beginning of May through the end of October. Totally Townies invites to you experience this Saturday morning ritual for yourself. We will be there, with our coffee in hand, wagon in tow, and smiles on our faces in the spring. Until then, you can support local farmers by shopping on Sundays at downtown Howell’s Opera House at The Howell Winter Marketplace . The Opera House is open from 10am – 2:00pm on Sundays for this indoor market. Enjoy!

  •    Some Thoughts on Thinking

If you think you are beaten, you are
If you think you dare not, you don’t,
If you like to win, but you think you can’t
It is almost certain you won’t.

If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost
For out of the world we find,
Success begins with a fellow’s will
It’s all in the state of mind.

If you think you are outclassed, you are
You’ve got to think high to rise,
You’ve got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win a prize.

    Life’s battles don’t always go
To the stronger or faster man,
But soon or late the man who wins
Is the man WHO THINKS HE CAN!

    – Walter D. Wintle – 1905

  •    About Buying Local

The best health food is food that is grown closest to you – food that is locally grown, and grown with the least amount of interference and chemicals. When we purchase food that has been trucked in, shipped in, or has happily come to peak freshness on a jet liner, we are missing out on an opportunity to support local farmers and local businesses. Local Harvest is a site devoted to promoting local farmers, farmers markets, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and sustainable growing. Click here to access a map that allows you to enter your zip code and find local growers, markets and CSA farms in your area. Totally Townies would like to thank Local Harvest for this wonderful source of information, and also encourage you to live local.

  •    Glimmer of Gratitude

There is always much to be grateful for if only we will pause to experience it. Life often hides gifts neatly within the fabric of our lives that we cannot see  right away, but if we pause long enough, and quiet our hearts to the calming gift of silence, we may not see…but we may actually experience a gift from which to be grateful.

Totally Townies challenges you to quiet your heart, calm your mind, set aside the phone, and computer for a few moments. Just be. Be calm. Be still. Breathe.

These are beautiful gifts. Just be. Just be thankful.
